Reinforcement of a one-way steel joist slab
The architect proposed and the builder disposes.
We’ve all had a building where the builder has been determined to demonstrate that he know more than every body. One of these occasions was the one that has given rise to this post.
The roof construction was planned with a partition wall. The builder proposed to replace them with a one-way steel joist floor slab with large bricks. So far, so normal. This solution was cheaper and the developer obtained a space under the roof. The problem arose when the builder decided on the profile of the joists: a T100 which was clearly insufficient. The struts were a clear indication that it was not working well, but it is difficult to reason with somebody who is called «the king».
In the end the builder was convinced. All it took was for the builder to get pissed off with the architect, get the developer out of the shower to take him to the site and prove him right by loosening the first struts and causing the highest supporting wall to crack under the support beam.
The solution to the problem was similar to the one proposed years later to reinforce a waffle slab: to convert the joist into a truss by introducing a pendulum and tie rods formed by two bars welded to it and to the flange of the profile.
Of course, the builder disposed again. Although it would have sufficed to have only one pendulum, which would have resulted in an inverted king post truss, in the end three pendulums were arranged which give a polygonal shape to the braces closer to the curve of the bending diagram of the joists.
Muy bueno el post!
Muchas gracias..
